In 1959, a historic event occurred that marked a before and after in Ayacucho: the reopening of the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga. It was the response to a unison demand from the entire Ayacucho people, through continuous demands and marches.

The University became a driving force in education and the economy. Notable teachers arrived and influenced the dissemination of new ideas for change. The figure of the intellectual professors was added to that of the representatives of traditional power (authorities, military, clergy, landowners, etc.). It also boosted the local economy, with studies, research and agricultural projects. Baldomero Alejos portrayed the vast majority of the university community.
